It’s finally here!! We are mere just days away from the ending to what has been described as “the best television show ever created”. For those who don’t know Game of Thrones, it is a popular TV series on HBO that is based off of author George R.R Martin’s novels of the same name.
This Sunday, HBO premiere Season 8: Episode 1. If you have been following along, you know it’s been a long wild ride. Last season we left off at John and Daenerys having sex on a ship headed to Winterfell with Tyrion and The Unsullied. Sansa, Arya, and Bran Stark awaiting their arrival. While John and Daenerys are doing the dirty, Bran tells Sam that John has never been a bastard and that he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. We have only come to find this out from a flashback showing that he is son to Rhaegar Targaryen, with his mother being Lyanna Stark.
The Night King has breached the wall with resurrected Viserion’s ice fire and is leading his army south. Cersei remains in King’s Landing with Gregor Clegane and her hand, Qyburn, by her side. Jamie has just left her to head to Winterfell after she revealed she lied and will not fight in the War for the Living. Now that we’re mostly caught up – we can only assume that Season 8: Episode 1 begins with Daenerys and John arriving in Winterfell. We will soon see the reunions we’ve be waiting for and hopefully John will find out his true linage as well as establish his relationship with Daenerys.
We know that the epic battle between the dead and the living will take place sometime durning this season. Some say possibly beginning in the 3rd Episode. Unlike past seasons, Season 8 will only have 6 episodes. Filmmakers have said that episode plays like a feature length movie.
Here is what I think the season will be structured like after hours of binging YouTube Fan Theories: The first 2 episode will mostly consist of character reunions and battle planning. The battle will begin in Episode 3. After that, I think it will take the winner south to face Cersei in King’s Landing and lastly give us a glimpse at the future of Westeros.
This television series has shown us everything from power, greed, love, hate, epic battles between light and darkness, and so much more. What I find so interesting about this show is that it’s a completely raw original fantasy world where each character is so real and complex. I think Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion Lannister describes it perfectly in a recent HBO interview: title “The Cast Remembers”. He says, “I’m not really interested in playing a fantasy. I’m an actor, I like to portray real people and sometimes in the world of fantasy that gets lost. This was the opposite because the relationship between these characters, because of who Tyrion is, how flesh and blood he is. It’s the most realistic show that I’ve ever done that also happens to have dragons and dead people walking around in it. I think a lot of fantasy is heavy on the dragon light on the character. We’re the opposite.”
I think this is why the show has been so successful and has created such a loyal fanbase of viewers retuning season after season. For some, its been almost a decade of their lives spend on Game of Thrones and with these characters. Some can’t even remember what life was like before GoT. For example, Isaac Hempstead, who plays Bran Stark, says in his interview form HBO’s special “The Cast Remembers” that, “I’ve grown up just as Bran has, from the world of acting, to being an adult. It’s become such a huge part of who I am. It’ll be sad not to be coming back and getting to be Bran.”
I have a feeling the ending will be bittersweet, but I know it will be worth it. As Peter Dinklage puts it, “It is truly cinematic.” My outline is just purely speculation about what will happen. Please take it with a grain of salt because as you know, anything can happen on Game of Thrones. I can’t wait for Sunday! Let me know in the comments what you guys think.
